Milan Grygar – Sound on Paper

In 1965, Milan Grygar (born in 1926) was drawing with a reed pen in his Prague studio. All of a sudden he became acutely aware of the sounds that the pen was making on the paper. He recorded them on magnetic tape. Thus, his first Acoustic Drawings, which interlink visual and acoustic elements, came into existence.  From that time on, in his oeuvre – which comprises drawings, images, photographs, performances and staged events by professional musicians using his scores – Grygar explored the interdependence between image and sound, seeking that moment when lines drawn by a pen invade emptiness and sounds break the silence.

The catalogue, which includes texts by Jörg Heiser, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Noemi Smolik, and Peter Weibel, was published by ZKM – Zentrum für Kunst und Medien – Karlsruhe in collaboration with Galerie Zdeněk Sklenář to accompany the eponymous exhibition held at ZKM, Atrium 1+2, from 23 July to 30 October 2016.
